What stays on your devices
Waterline is provided by Hyperstatic LLC. You do not need a Waterline account. We do not operate a server that stores your saved places, alert rules or preferences, and the app contains no advertising, tracking or third-party analytics SDK.
The app stores your selected and followed tide stations, custom place names, units, display choices, alert settings and downloaded tide, weather and current data on your device. Some small settings are also mirrored to the device’s Keychain so Waterline’s extensions can read them.
Waterline shares local data with its widgets and complications through Apple’s app storage. When you use Apple Watch, selected and followed stations, custom names, units and cached forecasts can pass between your iPhone and Watch using Apple’s WatchConnectivity service. Waterline has no separate account-based or iCloud sync service.
Search runs on your iPhone, from a list of places that comes with the app. What you type isn’t sent anywhere.
Location is optional
You can choose a tide station manually without granting location access. If you allow it, Waterline uses Apple Location Services to find a nearby station on your device. It requests a location fix when needed, rather than recording a continuous journey. A widget set to the nearest place can also request location when iOS permits widget location updates; otherwise it uses the last nearby station the app found.
Your location is used only on your iPhone. Tide and weather requests name a tide station or its coordinates, never your device’s own location: the place on screen, places you follow or have alerts for, places in widgets or a Live Activity, and, if you allow location, the station nearest you. A station near you can still show roughly where you are. The Places map uses Apple Maps; Apple may process map requests and location-related information under its Maps privacy policy.
Requests to tide and weather providers
Waterline connects directly to these services over HTTPS to retrieve data:
- NOAA CO-OPS: tide predictions, nearby tidal-current predictions and water-temperature observations. Requests include station identifiers, dates and requested data products.
- National Weather Service (NWS): forecasts and marine or coastal warnings, using coordinates at or around the selected station, forecast grids and zone identifiers.
- MET Norway: weather forecasts worldwide, including later forecast periods for US places. Requests include the station coordinates rounded to two decimal places.
- NOAA CoastWatch: satellite estimates of sea-surface temperature (NASA JPL’s MUR analysis) for places without a water-temperature sensor nearby. Requests include a small area around the place’s coordinates.
When iOS allows, Waterline also refreshes in the background, including overnight while your iPhone charges, for places with alerts or a Live Activity. Widgets, Apple Watch complications and Siri can also refresh a place’s tides and forecast when their saved copies run out. Those requests go to NOAA and the National Weather Service only. MET Norway is asked only while Waterline is open on your iPhone or Apple Watch.
These providers receive your connection’s IP address and normal request details. Weather requests identify Waterline and its version, with Hyperstatic’s public contact address; they do not include your email address or a Waterline user identifier. MET Norway states that it logs IP addresses and requested coordinates. Providers handle and retain their logs under their own policies: NOAA, NWS and MET Norway.
International tide predictions are calculated on your device from bundled harmonic data. They do not require a live request to the original harmonic-data publishers. Weather for those places still uses the services above.
Notifications and Apple services
Alerts are scheduled locally through Apple’s notification system. Their text may show a place name, tide or condition on your Lock Screen. Widgets and Live Activities also display your chosen place and conditions. You control notification previews and these features in system settings.
Apple processes information for its own services, including Location Services, Maps, Siri, Shortcuts, the App Store and device backups, under Apple’s privacy policy. Device backups may contain Waterline data depending on your backup settings.
Waterline does not upload its own usage analytics or crash reports to Hyperstatic. Depending on your Apple sharing settings or use of TestFlight, Apple may provide developers with app diagnostics, crash reports, feedback or aggregate usage information. See Device Analytics & Privacy. The version covered here has no in-app purchases or subscription entitlement system.
When you contact support
If you email [email protected], we receive your email address, message and any attachments you choose to send. An email started from Waterline’s Settings also includes the app version and build, iOS version and device model. You can edit that text before sending; opening an email link does not send it.
We use correspondence to respond to requests and investigate problems. Email is handled by our email-routing and mailbox providers. We retain it as needed for that support purpose and any legal obligations; you can contact us to request deletion.
Your choices and deletion
- Change location access in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Waterline. Manual station selection remains available.
- Manage notifications, previews and Live Activities in iPhone Settings. Remove widgets and Watch complications when you no longer want them displayed.
- Unfollow places, change custom names and delete alert rules inside Waterline.
- Deleting the app removes its ordinary app data from that device. Watch copies, device backups and Keychain values may persist separately; uninstall from the Watch and manage Apple backups separately if needed. Reinstalling is not a guaranteed full reset.
- Contact us about support correspondence. Hyperstatic cannot remotely read or erase the local settings on your devices.
