AirLocal support

Let’s get it working.

Tell us when a reading, source, widget, alert, or connection does not look right. AirLocal includes a prepared support message with safe, redacted diagnostics.

For the fastest diagnosis

In AirLocal, open Stations → Settings → Help & feedback. Choose Email support or Report an incorrect reading. The prepared message includes the app and iOS versions, appearance, saved-sensor count, and active connection state.

Those diagnostics exclude exact location, network addresses, sensor names and identifiers, and credentials. Please never send a private PurpleAir read key.

Common fixes

Nearby air is unavailable or seems wrong
  1. Confirm AirLocal can use location while the app is in use.
  2. Open AirLocal in the foreground so it can refresh the local Nearby selection.
  3. Check the source label and age. Nearby PurpleAir and official AirNow are separate sources and can update at different times.
  4. Open Why this station? when available to review freshness, confidence, distance, and alternate candidates.

If the station still looks wrong, use the prepared incorrect-reading report and include a screenshot.

AirNow says there is no nearby monitor

AirNow availability is independent from PurpleAir. This message means AirLocal does not currently have a suitable, sufficiently current named AirNow monitor for the Home location. It does not mean nearby PurpleAir is unavailable.

Open the app in the foreground, confirm location permission, and check the source age. AirNow's public station files commonly update on an hourly cadence, so a publication gap can resolve on a later refresh.

A widget says Not reported or will not refresh
  1. Open AirLocal and leave it in the foreground briefly. The app republishes the accepted Nearby source and requests a widget reload.
  2. Long-press the widget, choose Edit Widget, and confirm the intended source: Near you, AirNow near you, an owned sensor, or a saved station.
  3. Check the displayed age. iOS schedules widget execution, so AirLocal preserves the last honest reading rather than showing a fake live value.
  4. If the source remains unavailable after the app itself has a valid reading, remove and add the widget again, then email support if it persists.
AirLocal cannot find my PurpleAir sensor
  1. Make sure the iPhone and sensor are on the same local Wi-Fi network.
  2. Allow AirLocal's Local Network permission in iOS Settings.
  3. Confirm the sensor has power and can be reached from its normal PurpleAir setup tools.
  4. Try the saved address or manual-IP path in AirLocal if automatic discovery does not recover the sensor.

AirLocal verifies the PurpleAir sensor identity before applying a direct reading; it will not accept an unrelated device that later receives the same local address.

Notifications or alerts do not arrive
  1. Confirm notifications are enabled for AirLocal in iOS Settings.
  2. Confirm at least one alert rule is enabled inside AirLocal.
  3. For a private sensor, confirm reliable remote monitoring remains enabled if you expect alerts away from home.
  4. Remember that threshold alerts fire when a value crosses the configured level; they are not repeated for every reading already beyond it.
The app and widget show different stations

Near you is selected on the iPhone, then the widget stays on that named PurpleAir station between app synchronizations. A meaningful location or quality change can cause the foreground app to choose a new station before the widget receives its next timeline. Opening AirLocal lets it publish the current accepted source and request a widget reload.

Report an incorrect reading

Please include the screen, exact source name, displayed value, approximate time, and what you expected. A screenshot is helpful. Do not send private sensor credentials or a PurpleAir read key.

Different providers and nearby stations can legitimately disagree because of location, placement, pollutant mix, update cadence, averaging, and correction method. The Data & methodology page explains the distinctions AirLocal preserves.

Privacy and data deletion

Open Stations → Settings → Privacy & cloud data and choose Delete cloud data to revoke this installation's cloud session and remove its push destination, alert data, encrypted private-alert credentials, and usage buckets.

Cloud deletion does not erase saved sensors, device-held read keys, or local reading history. Use Forget this sensor in Settings for each sensor you want to remove from the iPhone.

If deletion cannot be verified because the service is temporarily unavailable, AirLocal does not pretend it succeeded. Try again later or email support. See the full AirLocal Privacy Policy for details.
